BREEDING METHODS |
Open line breeding with 8 lines. In each year 4 lines are in the first year of selection and another 4 lines are in the second year. |
PERFORMANCE TESTS |
In the time of performance testing all breading lines are located in the same apiary. We undertake 2 inspections during spring time and one in the fall. We register amount of bees, brood, honey, pollen, quality of brood, and temperament of worker honey bees. Eventual symptoms of chalk brood or some other disorders are also recorded. After fall treatments varroa mites are counted. Over wintering ability is fallowed and in February dead bees from bottom boards for nosema examination are sampled. |
HONEY PRODUCTIVITY TESTS |
In the time of black locust bloom honey bee colonies are weighed twice in three days and differences in honey gains are counted as a complete productivity. |
PROGENY TESTS |
All the honey bee queens from the breeding program are progeny tested and according the results mother queens for the next generation of selection and those for mass production of commercial queens are chosen. “Apicentar” and five cooperative queen breeders are reproducing new queens exclusively from the given mothers. Yearly reproduction capacity is cca ten thousands mated egglying queens. |
PACKAGING AND DELIVERY OF QUEENS |
Mated and egglying honey bee queen is marked and put with six worker bees into Benton's wooden cages supplied by label containing serial number and the data of origin. There is some sugar candy in a part of case. |
NUMBER OF HONEY BEE QUEENS REPRODUCED DURING THE LAST TEN YERS AND IN 2008. |
“Apicentar” is the largest producer of selected honey bee queens in Serbia and our capacity exceeds ten thousands mates honey bee queens destined for domestic beekeeping, as well as export to other countries. During the last ten years the entire reproduction has been cca 90.000. From that number 6.300 are exported to Jordan . |
BREEDING SUPPORTS |
“Apicentar's” breeding program is subsidized in part by Serbian government. However, most expenses are covered by our own honey bee queens sales and some other services. |
